Top 5 Halloween Season Musicals

Ever since the iconic chandelier descended in "Phantom of the Opera," I've been captivated by the allure of Gothic Musicals. While my early exposure was to the whimsical world of musical comedies like "Guys and Dolls," it was the darker, more nuanced tunes that fueled my passion for writing. As Halloween approaches, it's time to unveil my top 5 Halloween season musicals, steering away from the classics to explore newer, less-known gems.

Top 5 Halloween Season Musicals

5. Dracula, the Musical

Transport yourself to the eerie world of Bram Stoker's original 1897 Victorian novel with this haunting musical by Frank Wildhorn. Enchanting and horrifying in equal measure, the Gothic ambiance of Wildhorn's music, while not strictly Victorian or Edwardian, adds a timeless touch. "Dracula" is a rare gem that infuses fresh blood into a classic tale of love and darkness.

4. Sweeney Todd

Stephen Sondheim's "Sweeney Todd" is a year-round delight, but its themes of revenge, justice, and, yes, cannibalism, make it a perfect October pick. The dark and deep melodies, coupled with the juxtaposition of a high soprano leading lady, create a musical experience that lingers long after the curtain falls.

3. BeetleJuice: The Musical

"Daylight comes, and we want to go… to the theater!" This musical isn't a sequel to Tim Burton's classic; it's a unique and irreverent creation inspired by the beloved movie. In a world saturated with jukebox musicals, "BeetleJuice" stands out with its originality, wit, and over-the-top antics. It's a musical comedy that pokes fun at itself while delivering an optimistic message—death can be quite entertaining.

2. Heathers: The Musical

Step into the 80s with "Heathers: The Musical," a culturally inappropriate dark comedy based on the iconic movie. This production takes a macabre approach to revenge while delving into the struggles of popularity. A power ballad-filled journey that may be too much for some but is well worth the watch, especially since it's streaming free on Roku Channel.

1. Jekyll and Hyde: Frank Wildhorn

As a musical theater performer and director, "Jekyll and Hyde" holds a special place in my heart. Frank Wildhorn's masterpiece, with its alternate score options, keeps each performance fresh and unpredictable. This Gothic tale of Henry Jekyll's attempt to cure insanity only to awaken the evil within offers captivating love triangles, murder, and sacrifice—everything you need for a Halloween musical marathon.

While this list couldn't include all the fantastic Gothic musicals like "Evil Dead," "Lizzie," or "Little Shop of Horrors," sometimes decisions must be made. What's your favorite Halloween season musical? Let me know in the comments, and let the spooky symphony begin! 🎭🎃🎶
